Was asked how i spent Saturday. i did not say that i spent the last of it brawling away at a very sad film – not your traditional weepie, but Eric Till’s movie on Martin Luther.

Much liberty was taken with the chronology and interpretation of events, but the thing that started all the waterworks was the “penance” the pilgrims queued to do at 11:22. The terrible hopelessness of it all! First, the ultimate hopelessness of those who, being deceived, attempt to address their lack of hope with a few coins and a couple of “Our Fathers”. Second, the utter hopelessness of these same people who, having never been told the sweet gospel of grace, will remain in their lack of hope.
