Chinese Lunar New Year Wholesale Grocery Shopping in Woodlands
Asked the aunties out for some Chinese Lunar New Year grocery shopping at the wholesale outlets in Woodlands. It’d have been much faster and more efficient to go solo but it seemed a good opportunity to hang out (i mean, which aunty worth her auntiness would say no to factory outlet shopping?). Prices may not be the cheapest in town but comparable and a good variety within walkable radii.
Really enjoyed the company. These church aunties are vastly different from the other older women i’ve encountered – when they talk about other people in church, it’s with a view to introducing them and saying how nice and friendly these people are, not gossiping about their faults. And it’s not that the aunties are the sort who pretend that it’s more godly to think well of everyone (until they reach the end of their patience and blow up) or that they’re naive and are shocked by your saying anything bad about anyone – rather, they quite matter-of-factly acknowledge that people do have their faults and then explain their stories.
Their hope for us youngsters is that we grow up together like them: there’s a group that have been in the same church since secondary school and are close enough for the middle-aged single ladies to give a call to some of the married men to please come fix something in their homes.
This is in line with what i’ve been reading in Paul’s letter to the Ephesians. Those of us who’ve grown up in (or outside) families that haven’t been as nurturing and loving as one suspects they should have been would be wary of any sort of pressure to commit to a group. But Paul tells the Ephesians that any unity in the local church is merely a reflection of the reality that all believers have already been united in one body under Christ. There is no longer any division, neither according to race nor social status. But unity does not mean conformity – far from it, for God has given each member of a body different gifts so that they can all work together to build up the body.
A reversal of the judgement at Babel. And hard work.
I should make a closer study of this soon – for practical reasons, and also because it’s now week 7 of the Moore College External Studies course on Ephesians and i haven’t quite got the engine started…
