Human or Dancers?

September 21, 2011 Leave a comment Go to comments

It must have been an exciting last week for the Singapore club scene – with the opening of Avalon and Pangea at the Southern Crystal Pavilion of Marina Bay Sands.

They’ve got some apparent biggies down for F1 Singapore Grand Prix week but none sound exciting enough to tempt me to drink from diluted communal jugs or equivalent.

Have always gone clubbing more for the music and to observe how the DJs work the crowd than to wear down the dance floor myself. While i introduced friends to the different delights of Zouk/Velvet Underground and Butter Factory (while you could still totter out and puke into the upper reaches of the Singapore River) and Home Club, revisits were really only limited to interesting gigs. The multiplicity of good acts at the earlier ZoukOuts meant a higher propensity to check those out.

8-Bit Blitz8-Bit BlitzMostly, in recent years, Heineken Green Room Sessions have been godsend though too far and few between – the last event, 8-Bit Blitz, was helmed by minimal techno Germans Robag Whrume and Superpitcher in the lobby of the former Kallang Theatre in 2010.

We’ll see if Avalon and Pangea deliver class acts or if they’ll go the way of Ministry of Sound, formerly at Clarke Quay. I’m hoping for something that’ll get local DJs and clubbers to really up their game, not just pretentious differentiation but intelligent competent progress. Majulah Singapura?
