Behold This Child of Righteousness

September 9, 2011

The Cheating Sons, Plaza at 8Q, Singapore Art Museum
Happened upon Singapore Art Museum‘s Originals Only Open Mike session at the plaza at 8Q. Good vocals from Mike, Mark and Andrea and also an interesting first song from the nervous Hady. Stayed to watch featured band, The Cheating Sons, because a friend had previously mentioned that half the band were her ex-colleagues from WongPartnership (turns out these were Donovan – wielder of the banjo, mandolin, slide guitar, and Renyi the lead singer and player of the guitar, ukelele and harmonica).

Somewhat reminiscent of Daniel Sassoon’s (Livonia, Electrico, currently In Each Hand A Cutlass) journey. Must be really exciting!

On the way home on the Circle Line, between Bras Basah and Paya Lebar MRT stations, there were some rumblings and, uncontained, this burst forth, Athena-ish, fully-formed, complete with melody. Not a songwriter and this isn’t great, but hey, I’m thankful for whatever’s handed to me.

(Note to self: recording is the one at 11.25pm on 9 September 2011)

Behold this child of righteousness
Wrought not of its own goodness yet
A grace is given, a breast is proferred
No price is paid yet pardon offered

The hungry child born blind and deaf
Knows not of its impending death
Refusing grace, refusing life
Content to live in its own lies

Who can open that narrow mind?
Who can enflesh that stony heart?
Not our own work nor mind nor strength
But God’s alone, His Spirit’s tent

So here I stand in grace alone
Force-fed with love, eternal life
Inheriting the promises
I as an alien don’t deserve

O Lord please grant that I may ever
Love as you have shown before
Forgiven dearly, so forgive
And cling to You till The End comes.
